Kiehl’s NEW Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash

Every so often, a skincare product comes into my life that makes everything else fade into the background.

An amazing is launched this July!

An excellent cleanser by Kiehl’s was launched this July!

The Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash is one such product.

Based on the medicinal benefits of the gorgeous Calendula flower, this new cleansing foam by Kiehl’s will stop traffic and belongs to that class of skincare product that is good enough to shout about from the rooftops. True story!

This is one deliciously wonderful face wash of a quality that makes me think I am hearing angels sing. I speak from the bottom of my heart – I really, really love this cleanser and it has been a joy to use from as early as Day One.

Kiehl's new Calendula creation

Kiehl’s new Calendula creation is elegant and effective

The Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash is officially billed for Normal to Oily Skin, but Joy, who handles Public Relations for Kiehl’s Malaysia, has dry skin and explained that this product worked equally well on her sensitive and dry skin too.

The key to its effectiveness, she says, has to do with the presence of the cleanser’s active herbal ingredient, Calendula, which is present here as a floral extract and imparts the unique healing and anti-inflammatory qualities to this product that takes it well beyond the performance of an average cleanser.

A Tale of My Two Cleansers

Cleansing the skin, is in my opinion, the single most important step in any skincare regime because it takes away the day’s dirt as well as prepares the skin to absorb the goodness of any masks, lotions or serums that you plan on adding to the skin later.

In saying that, it has actually been very difficult for me to to find a cleanser that I’ve used beyond a single unit and for the most part, it has been a long and fruitless journey between many, many tubes of product.

I’ve tossed or given away more cleansers than I care to mention.

In practice, I find that many cleansers are good for removing the skin’s oils and debris but they do it in a way that is stripping and for me, this only gives temporary relief because an overly-aggressive cleanser actually dehydrates my skin and makes it automatically want to produce more oil to compensate for the moisture-loss.

On the other hand, some cleansers that are too creamy and emollient can make my skin break out and my face yet shinier. Another unwanted result.

So, what I have been doing for years before I was fatefully asked to try this Calendula-based cleansing product was to awkwardly use two, yes two different cleansers on my face at a session.

This has, for the most part, worked for me but it is a hassle to handle both a degreasing cleanser for my T-zone and an emollient cleanser on my face’s dry and flaky areas. As a result, face cleansing has always been a more of chore for me and I’ve always been crossing my fingers and hoping to find that proverbial stone to kill two birds.

In the past, I’ve been happy with my Vagheggi Equlibrium Cleansing Milk for my cheeks and then I would engage in something more astringent for oily areas down the middle of my face.

I’ve been using the Kiehl’s Ultra-Facial Oil-Free Cleanser  to reduce shine at my T-Zone after I discovered it in June at another Kiehl’s event and it does this well but I did tell you all in that review that it was a little more astringent than I like for the rest of my face.

I’ve been wishing and hoping for that one miracle product that combines the two functions into the one that I can use for my whole face and, by a stroke of luck and with thanks to Kiehl’s Malaysia, I think I’ve found the cleanser of my dreams in the Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash.

Yes, the Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash is actually good enough to finally help me replace my two-cleaner situation *throws confetti in the air*

So, what is Calendula?

Not only is the Calendula a gorgeous flowering plant, it is actually a veritable medicine cabinet of goodness.

The Calendula has an edible flower that has a host of anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties and is used widely in the culinary and beauty worlds for some of its amazing time-tested properties.

It has been used for centuries in cooking and the deep and vibrant colours of the flower is used as a natural food colouring and were once even used as dye for cloth.

The petals are often used to make a delicious and healthy tea that not only tastes good but is pretty to boot!

Some Calendula Flower Tea?

Calendula has some impressive medicinal and culinary properties that have been appreciated for hundreds of years and it was documented that during the American Civil War, for example, Calendula petals were used directly on wounds to stem bleeding and as an antiseptic wound-healing agent.

Today, Calendula is still famed as a herbal extract used in beauty products and as an active ingredient in alternative medicine remedies.

The Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash

& Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner

The Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash is a new gel cleanser that has been inspired by one of Kiehl’s most-loved products, the Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner, and its creation finally fills a market gap for a cleanser that pairs perfectly with that best-selling cult toner.

I was given a bottle to review for you and I can’t tell you how fortunate I was to have my paths cross with this new Kiehl’s cleanser. It’s simply packaged but beautiful, smells beautiful and best of all, works beautifully. This product has been an absolute pleasure to trial!

Launched just this July to a worldwide release, this cleanser is the sister product to Kiehl’s Worldwide No.2 bestselling Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner, and is a deep cleansing foaming gel face wash that not only smells delicious but works gently yet effectively in that way I’ve always wanted a cleanser to work on my skin –  perfectly balanced for my sensitive/combination skin.

What I’ve found is, irrespective of my oily T-zone or dry or sensitive cheeks, this is a product that handles both my extremes with an equal amount of tender loving care and it leaves the skin feeling gently refreshed and clean, but most significantly, relaxed and comfortable.

If you’re like me and just hate it when cleansers leave the skin clean but feeling tight and dry, you will find a new best friend with this soothing new formula.

On the other hand, it’s neither greasy nor emollient but sits perfectly in that fine and wonderful place between these two extremes leaving me with skin that’s prepped and ready for the next part of my skincare regime.

If divinity could be bottled as a beauty product, it would be as this pair of stellar skincare formulas. Together, I think these two items are a dynamic duo in gentle but effective skincare. They even look amazing lined up here together – and it feels like it was always meant to be!

A Divine Duo

A Divine Duo

I really can’t talk about the new Calendula Face Wash without saying more about the Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner. This toner is The Muse that inspired the Kiehl’s Team to develop what I think should soon be Kiehl’s most popular cleanser.

With the introduction of this Calendula gel cleanser, I think the famed Calendula toner has finally found its soulmate but it has been a truly long and lonely wait because the toner was actually developed by Kiehl’s more than 50 years ago and this cleanser has only been available from this month onwards. Talk about cross-generational match-making – this is epic!

Still, it’s better late than never and I just love using these two products in a row and sealing the deal with Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel as my moisturiser of choice.

Together, these beauties make a dynamic skincare trio and are an even better combination for me than the Ultra Facial Oil-Free Cleanser and Toner with the Oil-Free Gel.

Both products are packaged in Kiehl’s signature no-fuss, info-laden style. There are no bells and whistles here – just the honest-to-goodness prescriptive packaging that originates from the brand’s rich pharmaceutical roots.

I’m actually drawn to Kiehl’s minimalist style and I think the clean packaging of their products showcase the items in a chic and functional way that is at once classy and professional.

I like the way the products look in my bathroom. I like that the bottles are safely plastic for the bathroom and practical to use and enjoy how easy it is to dispense what I need from their containers.

The OCD creature in me also loves that each line of products sits harmoniously next to another skincare line by Kiehl’s. They share the same design symmetry with other Kiehl’s products and sometimes that matters, you know, when you’re on a Pinterest-streak and keen on having things look uniform and artful lol

My singular gripe about Kiehl’s products is that their product names are always a mouthful to say. Every product by Kiehl’s comes with the longest title that tells you just what to expect from each formula and this makes sense in formula terms but these product names are hard to say in conversation and extremely lengthy to write out. Thank goodness for the cut & paste function.

Anyway, if you haven’t been lucky enough to be up-close & personal with Kiehl’s famous Calendula Toner before, then I’m sure you’re curious about those pretty floating bits suspended in it.

Well, in each and every bottle of Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner, there is a batch of real calendula flower petals that have all been inserted by hand!

Not only do these petals dance away beautifully in the bottle, they’re also the real deal at delivering all the benefits of calendula to your skin. I like to shake the bottle to get a snowglobe effect but that’s because I’m just mesmerised by this gorgeous floral feature.

As you can see, the Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash is a completely transparent gel and the Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner, is lightly tea-coloured and contains all those lovely whole Calendula petals which I absolutely love!

Trial & Review

I have been using the Calendula cleanser twice a day, every day for the last 21 Days inclusive of this morning and it has moved immediately to the Numero Uno spot in my heart for cleansers. It just seems to do everything I have been looking for in a cleanser and these are my notes-:

  • Acts gently yet cleans away grease and dirt effectively
  • Non-Astringent – doesn’t sting or over-dry the skin
  • Non-Abrasive – it’s a smooth gel.
  • Soap-Free
  • Not creamy, sticky or greasy
  • No colouring – completely transparent and colourless
  • Foams up as soon as it comes in contact with water so I only require very little product at each wash.
  • Feels refreshing on skin and leaves no residue
  • It smells fantastic – delicious in fact and like a very light natural lemon tea. I don’t believe I’ve come across a nicer smelling cleanser in my life. It’s so soothing.
  • Doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin and is a pleasure to use. I actually look forward to using this cleanser every day.

I’ve been using the cleanser along with its partner, the Calendula Toner and this is a match made in skincare heaven. In this new cleanser, Kiehl’s have developed an excellent face wash with what I feel has a universal appeal and I would repurchase this product in a heartbeat.

I also think it pairs perfectly with the Calendula Toner which has been loved globally for more than 50 years and I know why. It’s certainly the prettiest toner I’ve ever seen.

I’m completely fascinated with the addition of the real calendula flower petals and the fact that it actually smells like a sweet Chrysanthemum tea makes it so soothing and delicious that I have to keep myself from drinking it. It’s…simply beautiful!

You can apply this toner in the regular fashion by swabbing it with a cottonball across the face or you can use it more intensively as a face mask by letting it absorb into a few pieces of cotton squares and layering it about the face. Either way, you’ll love that this toner is completely lightweight and dries to no residue with its gentle, alcohol-free formula.

My new favourites!

New favourites that are worthy of purchase!

Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash

Price: RM 105

Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner

Price: 125ml – RM80; 250ml – RM135; 500ml – RM210

In terms of pricing it appears that these two products are relatively pricier than most drugstore cleansers and toners but keep in mind that Kiehl’s is a global boutique brand with a strong heritage (only 160 years!) of excellent dermatologist-based skin solutions.

Don’t be discouraged by the pricing, both formulas are extremely economical to use and a little goes a very long way with all of Kiehl’s products. In fact, I can dispense an amount as little as a grain of rice and it lathers up so well that even that’s enough to clean a full face.

I enjoy using this cleanser with a Konjac Sponge just like the one I’ve pictured below because these amazing little sponges single-handedly increase the cleansing efficiency and the economy of any cleanser in your stash. Anyway, I digress, konjac sponges are great but that’s another post for another day.

Finally, I’m going to leave you with some scenes from the Kiehl’s event held at the lovely Serai for the launch of the Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash because it was the prettiest lunch with the ladies and it seems a shame not to share.

Launched at Serai@ Jaya, Kiehl's unveils its new star.

And with this slice of Pavlova cake…Kiehl’s ended the launch for me on a heavenly note!

This cake is heaven on a plate. Ethereal, lightweight and sinfully good. This was the best cake ever to go with the best cleanser ever.

P.S. Serai is absolutely worthy of a return visit – and definitely for the dessert!

  1. It must truly be quite the cleanser to displace your beloved Vagheggi, and if my love for the toner is anything to go by, this is a must have. You’ve officially sold me on it and I might have to sneak in a trip to Kiehl’s tomorrow to get my hands on the cleanser! It’s less pricey than I thought it would be, which is a clincher!

  2. @ arpitabread: It has replaced every cleanser I’ve ever had in my life! This is a godsend. I love lemon tea and this reminds me of lemon tea for the skin. But…can I still keep the Vagheggi? I have so much love. I love that I can be polygamous in my beauty life *laughs wickedly*

  3. @SG I think you always need a bit of a backup because skin tends to get tolerant to products very quickly. Vagheggi would be a good break to kickstart the Kiehl’s cleanser when its effectiveness plateaus.

  4. @ arpitabread: That’s absolutely true! They reminded me about that at the Vagheggi event too – that our skin builds up a natural tolerance over time and we need to alternate our skincare accordingly to reinvigorate it. Great point, girl! I really want you to try this cleanser though. It has surprised me with how great it is. A keeper!

  5. You did a very informative share! I love how the calendula was inserted by hand in herbal extract toner! looks so handmade & pure…but to see the’s killing my pocket if I buy them! T.T

  6. @ Jia Jia: I agree, that’s one of the best features of the Calendula toner and just seeing all those real petals floating in the bottle just makes my day.

Price-wise, the set does set you back a couple of hundred and I understand that it’s not for everyone’s budget especially as you are still studying.

You know what though, there are smaller sizes available for both products and of course you can drop by to collect a famous Free Sample from Kiehl’s in order to be sure before you drop down any serious dough. Worth the try!

I’m thinking of saving up for some jumbo units once this set runs out but I suspect I still have several month’s worth of uses from these two bottles before I get to restocking – a little goes a long way.

  7. @ Sarah: Yes, you’re right! This is one very cool toner. The real petals just add a completely awesome result to the finished product. More brands should do this, don’t you think? I think Linden Leaves has something similar with real leaves added.
